Charles “Chuck” Allen Houston was born March 16, 1962 in Marietta, Georgia.
He spent the first year of his life living at Crain Garage before his parents moved into a new home on Hickory Drive. He grew up as the youngest of over twenty children within a five-year age span along that street. He also enjoyed countless weekends with his grandmother in Smyrna, Georgia.
He fondly spoke of his time at Marietta High School in the classroom, playing football, and wrestling. After graduating in 1980, he attended Wofford College where he played football and studied geology before transferring to Appalachian State University.
Chuck returned to Marietta to work with his father at Crain Garage, later Houston Brothers, where he had worked throughout his youth. Soon after, he met his beloved wife, Dawn Houston, when she took a job delivering a limousine to San Antonio for the company. Although this was the first time they were properly introduced, he always claimed to have had a crush from an early age on the “girl who stood on a stool to pour sweet tea at Pinecrest every Sunday morning.”
Chuck and Dawn married on May 21, 1988 and had four children. They raised them to understand the importance of education, determination, kindness, and a deep faith in Jesus Christ. He was always a phone call away and would drive over thirteen hours at the drop of a hat if any of his children needed him. He devoted his life to his children as a father, coach, and their greatest supporter.
In his later years, Chuck enjoyed various hobbies including woodworking, reading, and gardening. No one left his home without a new birdhouse, book recommendation, or freshly picked vegetables. Most importantly, Chuck adored his seven granddaughters, who knew him as “Pop Pop,” and found the greatest joy each time they would call or visit.
Chuck loved the beach and traveling across the country, often dreaming of moving, but could never uproot himself from true friends and the community he cared for so dearly. He was the sixth recorded generation to live in what is today Cobb County, but it wasn’t a heritage that made Chuck so proud of his home, it was the deep bonds he formed with those who surrounded him, both new friends and longtime companions.
Chuck is proceeded in death only a week earlier by his beloved wife, Dawn Houston, with whom he will be laid to rest. Chuck is survived by his children: Charles Houston, Erik Houston, Miranda Foster, and Valerie Houston, and his seven granddaughters: Stella Houston, Isla Houston, Waverly Foster, Rosalee Houston, Blythe Foster, Emma Houston, and Lachlyn Foster.
The funeral service for Mr. and Mrs. Houston will be held on Friday, December 29, 2023 at 1:00pm at Piedmont Church in Marietta, Georgia. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 28, 2023 from 4:00pm-7:00pm at Marietta Funeral Home.
