May 31, 1942- Oct 11, 2018
Ann Dubiel Gemmill, age 76, passed away October 11, 2018 after a long battle with dementia and related health issues.
Born in Rochester, New York in 1942 to Edward and Olive Dubiel, Ann grew up playing golf with her mother and brother during the summers and weekends at Silver Lake Golf Club in Perry, New York. She was the youngest club champion there in 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, and 1964.
She attended Cornell University and graduated with a degree in home economics. She had many fond memories of her time there including her friendships with her Delta, Delta, Delta sorority sisters. She continued to support Cornell related activities throughout her life. It was at Cornell that she met and married John W. Gemmill. They were married for six years.
Ann taught for nearly 30 years at Poway High School in San Diego, California where she created and ran the campus restaurant the Titan Terrace as part of an innovative program to help students gain restaurant skills. Many of her students went on to successful careers in hospitality, making her extremely proud.
Ann loved entertaining and created the Pacific Bluffs Condominium Association Social Committee and served as new resident ambassador at Atria Senior Living Community in Marietta, Georgia. Throughout her life she loved cooking, trying new restaurants and making sure no one ever left her house hungry. She lived in San Diego for 35 years and enjoyed the sunshine, traveling up and down the coast and driving her convertible with the top down year-round. She was creative, excelled at numerous craft projects throughout her life, and surprised us all by painting beautiful watercolor images later in her life.
Ann was dearly loved by her family: her daughter Laurie Gemmill Arp and Amy Gemmill Feste; grandchildren Matthew Feste and Emily Feste; sons in law Charles Arp and Peter Feste; and her brother Robert Dubiel and his wife Elizabeth Dubiel.
A celebration of Ann’s life will be held at HM Patterson & Sons-Canton Hill Chapel, 1157 Old Canton Road NE, Marietta, GA 30068 on Saturday, October 20th at 11:00 a.m. with visitation following.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Ann’s name to No Kid Hungry https://www.nokidhungry.org/ or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America https://alzfdn.org/.
