Winifred Helene McAleer Noyes, 88, of Marblehead, MA, passed away on July 9, 2013. Born in New York City on May 2, 1925, she was the daughter of John Joseph McAleer, and Helene Jurgensen. Miss McAleer attended grade school and high school in Jackson Heights New York. After a brief modeling career she worked for Western Union Telegraph in Manhattan. The Powers Modeling Agency named her "Miss Subways" in June of 1944, and her picture ended up in Life Magazine. She received hundreds of letters and proposals from service men all over the world, but married her lifetime partner Major Edward MacArthur Noyes II in New York on June 22nd, 1946.
After World War II, Mr. and Mrs. Noyes relocated to Cincinnati Ohio where Mr. Noyes was employed by Procter & Gamble Company for 32 years. During her time in Cincinnati, along with raising 3 children "Winnie" was active in local theater, acting and directing, as well as playing the piano, painting, and managing the Wyoming Civic Center, a local community club. After their children finished high school and were off to college, Mr. and Mrs. Noyes returned to Mr. Noyes' childhood home in Connecticut where he worked for Yale University until retirement. While in New Haven, Mrs. Noyes was a Patron of the Arts. She worked tirelessly for the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, was active with her husband in the Yale Alumni Association, and developed a reputation as a fanatical Yale football and hockey fan, as well as being a member of the Long Wharf Theater. Together Ted and Winnie traveled extensively in Europe, Egypt, Greece, and Turkey. Mr. & Mrs. Noyes celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Bermuda with their children. They spent every summer of their lives together at their beloved family home on Squirrel Island in Maine.
After Mr. Noyes passing in 1999, Mrs. Noyes moved to Marblehead where two of her children and 4 grandchildren resided. Most recently, Mrs. Noyes lived at Bertram House in Swampscott.
Mrs. Noyes was pre-deceased by Edward her husband of 55 years. She is survived by 3 children: Dr. Edward MacArthur Noyes III of Indianola, Washington, Ms. Nancy Noyes Foss of Marblehead, and Mr. James McAleer Noyes of Marblehead, 6 grandchildren: Dr. Adam MacArthur Noyes of Middletown, Connecticut, Whitney Noyes Beattie of Everett, Washington, Brian McAleer Noyes of East Boston, Massachusetts, Gregory Vincent Noyes, Michael Edward Noyes, and Sarah Margaret Noyes “all of Marblehead”, and one great grandchild: Bo Beattie of Everett, Washington.
The Noyes family will hold a private remembrance at their summer home on Squirrel Island, Maine at a later date.
