James P. Gilligan, of Marblehead, MA, passed away on July 28, 2012 at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. He was the devoted husband of Rita with whom he shared 37 happy years of marriage. Born in Yonkers, NY, he was the son of the late James T. and Marion P. Gilligan.
He graduated from Amherst College, cum laude, in 1952. He was an air intelligence officer (LTjg) with Navy fighter squadron, U.S. 7th Fleet, 1952-1955.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his two daughters, Rebecca C. Spinale and her husband Joseph of Melrose, and Allyn Do and her husband Terry Chan of Swampscott; and two grandchildren, Stephen and Andrew Chan; sister Margaret (Alfons dec.) Alt. He leaves nephews, nieces, and cousins. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary G. (Arthur) McNeill.
Jim was employed as Library Director at Grossman Library, Harvard University Extension School until his retirement in 2001.
Visitation will be held in the Eustis-Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead, on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 8:30 am. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 am at Our Lady, Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Avenue. Burial will be at Waterside Cemetery, 294 West Shore Drive.
