Shawn Kelleher Smith, 78, passed away on May 19th, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife Carol and their five children. Shawn was born on September 11th, 1945, to John and Rita Smith in Brockton, Massachusetts. The second oldest of nine children, Shawn grew up surrounded by love and adoration from his parents and siblings. His love of God, family, education, athletics, and friendship were the five tenets instilled in him throughout his youth and adulthood, which he would later impart with his children. He attended Cardinal Spellman High School where he was President of his senior class and later Brown University where he graduated magna cum laude while also excelling on the basketball court and baseball field for the Brown Bears.
Shawn’s business career began at Kidder Peabody in Boston, Massachusetts, followed by 37 years at Merrill Lynch where he built endless friendships. His generous spirit shone brightly in retirement and a second career blossomed in non-profit work. As Chair of the Board at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, Shawn played a pivotal role in the construction and expansion of a $55 million Critical Access Hospital to serve the community. He served on the board at Brewster Academy and was on the Board of Governors at Bald Peak Colony Club in Melvin Village, New Hampshire.
Shawn and Carol’s move to Horseshoe Bay, Texas in 2011, was met with the warmth of many new friendships. His commitment to community continued as he served on organizations dear to him. He served as a Chancellor with the Knights of Columbus and President of the Men’s Golf Association in Horseshoe Bay.
Shawn is survived by the “love of his life”, Carol, whom he was married to for 53 years. A proud and loving father, Shawn is also survived by his daughter, Susan Smith; son, Shawn Smith II and wife, Beverly; daughter Dana Wiley and husband, Brian; daughter Kelly Hardy and husband, Jon; daughter Tysun McKay and husband, Nevin. He cherished the opportunity to share in all his grandchildren’s love, passions and interests. His love for his grandchildren, Harriet, Virginia, Quinn, Tatum, Caroline, Teddy, Kate, Kieran, Nevin, and Naomi was unmatched and unwavering.
Shawn’s larger than life personality could only be overshadowed by his sincere love for other people. Shawn made an indefinable impact on all that he met, and his love and spirit will be cherished and carried by all his loved ones. A devout Catholic, a loving husband, an inspirational father, a proud grandfather, a true friend, a successful man, a caring soul, a wonderful dancer, a horrible singer; he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund, an organization of St. Paul the Apostle Parish. A service and celebration of life for Shawn will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Horseshoe Bay, Texas on June 5th, 2024, at 10:30 a.m
