Marble Falls and Burnet County lost a native son, Lee Ussery, Sr., on September 25, 2023.
Lee was born on Avenue E in Marble Falls on October 26, 1932. He and friends grew up fishing on our river and lakes, and riding and training horses was a shared passion. These friends maintained their strong bonds throughout their lives.
Lee played football at Marble Falls High School and graduated from there in 1950.
Cattle and horses remained a life-long focus and sometimes occupation for Lee. He also worked as the Central Freight agent in Marble Falls and Burnet for many years, and locals will recall their connection with him in that role, as well as through his work with the Farmers Home Administration and the John Hoover Companies.
People who knew Lee will also remember that one of his passions—maybe to the point of obsession—was catching and frying fresh catfish for friends and family. Those who enjoyed such hospitality at the Usserys’ Marble Falls home are numerous.
Lee is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 50 years, Annette Virdell Ussery. He was preceded in death by his grandparents S. H. and Mattie Ussery (S. H. was Marble Falls’ first barber) and parents, Gene Ussery and Anna Belle Bridges Ussery—all of whom grew up and spent their lives in Marble Falls.
Surviving children are Lee Ussery, Jr.; Lisa Gay Thurman (Brad); and Bubba Ussery (Betty), and stepchildren are Dr. Jim Roberson (Susan); Gena Schuessler (John); John Roberson (John Blackmon); and Jil Dillard (Lance). Lee’s surviving grandchildren and step-grandchildren are Shea Ussery, Lane Thurman, Chapel Schuessler (Shelly), Amanda Roberson (Patrick Cunningham), Chandler Schuessler (Vanessa Ramey), Dr. Audrey Roberson (Michael Mills), Dr. Caitlin Anderson (Dr. Nelson Anderson), Ethan Holland (Madison Ruffin), and Emily Holland (Jake Snyder). Lee also leaves behind three great-grandchildren.
During a long illness Lee was cared for by the caring staff at Altus Hospice and Kingsland Hills Care Center.
Lee has been a large and loving presence here in Burnet County for many years, and he will be greatly missed.
Friends are invited to gather at the Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Marble Falls between 4 and 6 p.m. on Friday, October 6, 2023.
