Anne S. Kirkland passed away December 9, 2019. She was born January 11, 1921 in Dayton, Ohio to Joseph Kubizna and Mary Lacho Kubizna, immigrants from Czechoslovakia. The family moved when she was a young child to Kalamazoo, Michigan where Anne completed high school and secretarial school.
Anne applied and was accepted into the WASP program during World War II. Unfortunately, just as she was accepted, and had resigned her current job, the WASP program was canceled. At that point, she went into the American Red Cross, and served her career in Japan and the Philippines, just as the war was ending.
After her time in the American Red Cross, Anne moved to Washington, DC where she worked in the War Department for several years. She was also one of the first employees to move from the DC office "out" to the newly constructed Pentagon Building, where she was working when she gave up her government career when she married.
Anne married Joseph Kirkland while in Washington, DC and they immediately moved to Carlsbad, NM, where Joe had a job as a pharmacist. From there, Anne and Joe moved to Odessa, TX, where they lived until they purchased a drug store in Midland, TX. Anne and Joe both worked in the drug store they owned for the next 18 years.
After they sold Kirkland Pharmacy, Anne worked as a secretary for an oil company in Midland until she retired to move to Horseshoe Bay full time.
Anne and Joe purchased their home in Horseshoe Bay in 1979, as a second home, and commuted for several years from Midland. They became full time Horseshoe Bay residents in 1990. They were both quite active in the Horseshoe Bay community, playing golf, volunteering, and socializing while watching the community and parish of St. Paul's Catholic Church grow. Joe passed away in 2005.
Anne's survivors include her daughter, Betsy Kirkland Howard, and her husband Bill Howard, and their family, her two sons Patrick Joseph Kirkland and John Scott Kirkland, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Anne, throughout her life, had an unwavering faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ. Her Catholic faith was very strong, and certainly sustained her life, and that of her family. We find comfort in knowing that she is now with God, her husband Joe, and the many members of her deceased family, in a most special place in heaven.
