Susanna Gottschling Karst, 89, of Mansfield, Ohio passed away at her home on Sunday, April 17, 2022. She was born in Felldorf Village of Transylvania, Romania on August 27, 1932 to the late Martin and Susanna (Seiler) Gottschling.
Susanna had lived in Romania into her teenage years. Witnessing the hardship of World War II, she later immigrated to America in 1951, but little did she know she would be on the same boat as her future husband, Michael Karst. They arrived in America via Ellis Island together and the couple later got married in 1952. Susanna was known for her baking skills and made the best cookies. She enjoyed canning and planting a large garden every year. She attended St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
Susanna is survived by her son, Michael J. (Dottie) Karst Sr.; grandson, Michael (Jennifer) Karst Jr.; great-grandchildren, Desirae Branam and Caleb Branam; siblings, Sara (Dale) Mellott and Elsa Beer; sister-in-law, Frieda Gottschling; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Michael Karst; brother, Martin Gottschling and an infant brother; brother-in-law, Lee Beer; niece Juanita; nephew, Billy Schmid; and uncle, Peter Gottschling.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield, Ohio 44902. A service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Chris Thomas officiating. She will be laid to rest in Mansfield Cemetery.
