He was a hard worker his entire life beginning at age 15 ½ working at A & P Grocery Store. Bob began working at the age of 18 at the “Tuby”, now Arcellor Mittal, in Shelby for 46 years, retiring in 2002. He acquired the nickname, “Barney”, throughout his time at the Tuby. While simultaneously working at the Tuby, he began working at Roethlisberger Moving Company and remained there for 11 years.
Bob was a 15-year member of Sar Shalom Church and ministered to residents at area nursing homes. He enjoyed reading, traveling and all types of food. His Harley Davidson motorcycles were his passion and he considered the time on his bike therapeutic. He attended swap meets every chance he could get. Most of all, being with his family was the greatest pleasure of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Joanne Owens Sherman, whom he wed on November 20, 1999; eight children, Monica (Dan) Wilson, Celeste Hummel, Cathy (Dennis) Esterline, Tim (Lisa) Sherman, Jacki (Herschel) Barnett, Terri (Dave) Hicks, Dawn (Ray) Seigman, and Jim (Shaina) Cornelius; nineteen grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild arriving in June.
There will be no visitation or service at this time. The Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is honored to serve the family.
