Mary Alice (Dafler) Mielke, 93, of Ashland, passed away Monday afternoon, August 19, 2013 at Brethren Care Village. She was born March 27, 1920 in New Lebanon, Ohio to the late Naomi (Imber) and Harvey E. Dafler.
Mary Alice was employed at Ashland College in the following capacities: from 1950-55 as Recorder; 1955-1962 as Dean of Women; 1962-1964 as Registrar; 1966-1972, Academic Counselor; 1972-1977 as Admissions Counselor. From 1965-1966, she was employed as Assistant to the Registrar at The Ohio State University.
Mary Alice was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was a member of Hope Circle and the Women's Missionary Society. She was a member of the National Association of Deans of Women and Counselors, Ohio Association of Collegiate Registrars, Faculty Women's Club at Ashland University, Phi Alpha Gamma Sorority and Esoteric Book Club.
She is survived by a step-son, John A. Mielke of Albany, NY; a step-daughter-in-law, Mary Evelyn Mielke of Worthington, OH; grandsons, Matthew (Nicola) Mielke of San Francisco, CA and Daniel (Morganne) Mielke of Cleveland; a foster brother, Bill K. (Fran) Curtis of Tucson, AZ; and three great-granddaughters. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on May 5, 1986 by her husband, Dr. Harold A. Mielke whom she married on November 9, 1963; a step-son, David H. Mielke on October 26, 2007; a sister, Norma L. Dafler; and a foster brother, Warren F. Curtis.
A funeral service conducted by Pastor Michael Namy will be held Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. Private family burial in Ashland Cemetery will follow the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Harold A. Mielke Scholarship Fund at Ashland University, First United Methodist Church or Brethren Care Village.
