She was born on May 13, 1936, in Ashland the daughter of Arthur and Margaret (Welsh) Smith. She graduated from Polk High School in 1954 and studied accounting at Kent State University.
Mary resided in Ashland nearly all her life. She worked as a bookkeeper and tax preparer for many years and owned and operated E. C. Young Business Services until she retired. She later worked at Wagner TV, the Ashland County Fairgrounds and the annual Home and Garden Show at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Mary loved to travel, especially to Alaska. She also enjoyed making craft items, reading, playing online computer games, snowmobilling and spending time with her family and friends. Her favorite holiday season was Christmas and she loved giving gifts and decorating her home. She also loved animals and had many over the years, often reminiscing about her prize collie, Princess, and her cat, Smokey.
Mary was a longtime member and Past President of the Ashland Emblem Club 61, a member of Ashland Elks Lodge 1360 and a member of the Unionport Chapter 360 of the Order of Eastern Star. She also graduated from the Ashland Police Department Citizens' Academy in 1997.
On October 27, 1956, Mary married the love of her life, Richard G. Adams, who preceded her in death on April 24, 1992.
Mary is survived by a daughter, Lori (Jeffrey) Kaple of Mansfield; two sons, Paul Adams of Ashland and Christopher (Teri) Adams of Dublin; four grandchildren, Logan Adams, Haley Adams, Alissa Adams and Mitchell Adams; one great grandson, Hayden Ruby; and two dear friends, Jan Barkhurst of Mantua and Susan Watkins of Ashland.
Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 20, 2017 and again from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 21, 2017 at the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 308 Claremont Avenue, Ashland. Members of Ashland Elks Lodge 1360 will perform a graveside service in Ashland Cemetery following calling hours on Monday. A Celebration of Life luncheon will be held at the Ashland Elks Lodge, 402 Center Street, Ashland immediately following the service.
Mary was dedicated to community service causes and other charitable work in the area. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Emblem Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 71, Ashland, Ohio 44805, the Ashland County Humane Society, 1710 Garfield Avenue, Ashland, Ohio 44805 or Pathways Hospice, 619 Claremont Avenue, Ashland, Ohio 44805.
