Lawrence “Larry” D. Wilfong Jr., 71, of Mansfield, Ohio passed away into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 after a short illness. He was born in Mansfield on January 20, 1951 to the late Lawrence D. Wilfong Sr. and Alice (Bamble) Wilfong.
Larry was a 1969 graduate of Madison High School. He was a hard worker and remained employed at Pentair Water Co. in Ashland, Ohio for 38 years where he later retired in 2016. Larry was not only a jokester full of character, but was a true family man and loved spending time with his family and having get-togethers. He attended Mansfield Baptist Temple of which he loved his Pastor, Robert Kurtz, and his family very much. Having a servant’s heart, Larry found joy in helping his family and friends, especially in repairing things for them. Larry was in a church bowling league and bowled a perfect 300 game in 1999. His hobbies included woodworking, feeding the birds, and attending to his flower and vegetable gardens. He was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns.
Heaven gained another angel that day. Larry was a great husband, father and friend. All the memories shared with Larry will never be forgotten, but forever cherished by those he loved. He will be greatly missed.
Larry is survived by his wife of 49 years and best friend since high school, Melinda Wilfong; daughter, Tanya (Tim) Justice; son, Matt (Angela) Wilfong; eight grandchildren, Josh (Katelynn) Wilfong, Tiffany (Jeff) Edwards, Jennie Martin, Elizabeth Rose, Breanna (Sean) Bently, Angel Zornes (Hunter) Morrow, Alayna Wilfong and Haylàe Wilfong; five great-grandchildren, Clatyon Bently, Lillian Bently, Nolan Morrow, Serenity Edwards and Bently Edwards; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce (Scott) Temme of Lima, Ohio, Louise (Don) Phillips of Mansfield and Mike Hindman of Mansfield; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sue and Dave Reynolds of Calhan, Colorado and Al Hockensmith of Mansfield; father-in-law, Wilbur Hockensmith of Mansfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends and neighbors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his uncle and aunt, Bob and Evelyn Wilfong; sister, Sharon Hindman; and nephew, Kevin Phillips.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield, Ohio 44902. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 13, 2022 at Mansfield Baptist Temple, 725 Stewart Rd. N., Mansfield, Ohio 44905 with Pastor Robert Kurtz officiating. There will be one hour of visitation prior to this service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Larry will be laid to rest in Shenandoah Cemetery.
