Joseph Eugene Whyde was born Aug. 4, 1953 in Newark, OH to Betty (Cox) and Clarence Whyde. After his mother’s death, Joe was adopted, raised and loved by Rev. Curtice L. and Mary A. (Heldenbrand) Powell.
Joe moved to Mansfield at age 11. He attended Mansfield City Schools until 8th grade before being enrolled in Madison. Joe finished his education at Madison Senior High, graduating June 1972. Joe accepted his diploma, walking across the stage on crutches, after surviving a near fatal pedestrian-car accident in Dec 1971.
Joe’s father Curtice was an evangelist, in the Nazarene faith, holding revivals throughout Ohio and neighboring states. Joe had a lovely singing voice, often heard in the family quartet comprised of his father, Curtice, mother, Mary singing and playing piano, and sister, BrenDa. One of Joe’s favorite hymns was "I’m a Child of the King".
Joe worked a variety of jobs in the Mansfield area, always with a smile on his face.
Always happiest with simple things, Joe enjoyed bologna and cheese sandwiches as his go to snack. His dislike of chicken was well known, as Joe never met a chicken he liked.
Joe was a friendly person, enjoying time spent with family and friends. He was a member of several CB groups and could spend hours chatting with his "CBer" friends. Joe’s CB handle was "Pepper salt" a play on his prematurely gray hair. Almost everyone had a good "Joe" story to tell.
Joe was predeceased by his parents and 4 siblings.
Joe is survived by his sister, BrenDa Davis, his nieces Amber (Carl) Kiehne, and Zachary (Amber’s son), Ashlee Davis, and Aimee Davis, nephew Adam Davis. His brother, David Blaker, (niece Maleyah, nephews Aayden and Dezden Blaker). Sisters, Sara Blaker (nieces Elena, and Aubree, nephew Braydon), Amanda Blaker, his ex-wife Terrie Stollings, his stepmother, Cheryl Powell and foster sister Sussan Warner.
