Vin was born on July 6, 1942 in Dayton, Ohio to Albert and Enid (Martin) Black. Vin began his long teaching career at Appleseed Junior High where he dedicated 11 years. He served as Attendance Officer at Malabar for a year, and then took a position as Assistant Principal for Mansfield Senior High where he devoted 11 more years. Following this, he returned to Appleseed Middle School as Principal for 3 more years. He went back to the classroom, teaching German at Ashland High School.
Vin was a kind, gentle, caring, intelligent, inquisitive gentleman. He was family oriented, thorough and dignified in every way. A generous man, Vin felt strongly about giving back to his community that had always supported him. Vin served the Richland County area in many ways over the years. He was a proud member of National, State, and Local Teacher’s Associations; served on the board of the Richland County Public Library; volunteered at OhioHealth of Mansfield; drove for Red Cross Blood transport; was a Richland Alternate Program Board Member and a trusted tutor for the HOST program of Mansfield City Schools during his retirement. He was an active member of First Congregational Church, holding many positions over the years.
Most of all, he loved being with his wife and dog, Jasmine. Vin never let a moment go by without telling Jo just how much he loved her. She cared for him exceptionally well and made certain he could stay in his own home during his illness. Vin was a voracious reader, a great photographer, enjoyed traveling with his wife, and was a collector of dictionaries and books. Vin loved his wife’s cooking as well. He always complimented and appreciated what she did.
Vin leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Mary Jo (Stuckman) Black; daughter, Katherine (Kevin) King; grandchildren, Christa (Robert) Daley and Timothy King; great-grandchildren, Rachel and Samuel Daley; sister, Janet (Jack) Pirozzi; and 13 nieces and nephews. Many of the nieces and nephews considered Vin and Jo to be another set of grandparents. In addition to his parents, Vin was preceded in death by daughter, Margaret Anne “Meg” Black on March 15, 1988; and sisters, Carolyn Clark and Laura Lowe.
Special thanks to Southern Care Hospice nurses and staff, especially Sherry, Cindy, Keeley and Pastor Mike along with his caregivers, Bobbi and Jill.
