Jim was a lifelong resident of New Hampshire and graduated from Manchester Central High School in 1954. Following graduation, Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force. After completing Officer Candidate School, he was assigned to Okinawa, Japan, where he served for three years. Following that, he was reassigned to the Republic of Vietnam in 1969 where he was awarded the Bronze star. His merits did not go unrecognized and he received numerous letters of recommendations and commendations, earning him two “Good Conduct” medals. Jim served proudly and at his retirement, he accomplished the title of Major.
Jim had many passions and was a musician from an early age. His primary instrument was the trumpet and he played in many small bands throughout his life, including the George Ine Band. He brought this skill into his devotion to the military and played TAPS for any Veteran’s family in need. During his career, Jim’s primary business focus was in restaurant management. After retirement, he took great pride in being a spectator at his grandchildren’s numerous sports activities and was affectionately known as Poppop. Jim will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his children; daughters, Stacey M. Lukeman-Juza and Kathleen A. Lukeman-Bayliss and son, James W. Lukeman; four wonderful grandchildren, Michael A. Hughes, William A. Bayliss IV, Maxwell D. Lukeman and Sophia A. Lukeman; three great-grandchildren, Sawyer R. Hughes, Wilder J. Hughes and Ledger F. Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife, Ruth (McCalmont) Lukeman.
A celebration of life for Jim will be held Friday, December 29, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at McHugh Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 283 Hanover St, Manchester, New Hampshire 03104.
