George W. Marchant age 86 passed away peacefully on Sunday September 22, 2024, in Manchester NH while in the company of his son. Born on March 16,1938 in Brockton, MA., he was the oldest son of the late Willard and Jessie (Adams) Marchant.
He was born and raised in East Bridgewater, MA and graduated from East Bridgewater High School in 1956. He attended Bates College in Lewiston ME, earning a Bachelors Degree in History in 1960. He went on to complete his Masters at Brown University in 1963.
He met his wife, Mary Patricia Mullan in 1973, while attending a Weight Watchers Meeting. He was a member and she was the leader. He fell in love with her and they were married on August 25, 1973. They had their first and only child, George Marchant Jr., on August 19, 1975.
After College, in 1963, George took a job with the Department of the Army at Edgewood Arsenal in Edgewood, MD in the Procurement Policy Office. In 1977 he was given the opportunity to help establish a new Contracting office at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover NJ. Later that year he and his family moved to the Lake Mohawk section of Sparta NJ. Throughout his career George was considered an expert and “go-to” person for information on Federal Acquisition Regulations. He was very active in the National Contract Management Association. He was looked at as mentor to young interns and took the time to help them learn and prosper. At Picatinny George served many years as the Chief of the Policy Office. George retired from government service in January 2006.
In his retirement, George liked to travel with his wife and the Seniors Group in Sparta. He would spend most weekends at the Lake Mohawk Country Club Restaurant. He enjoyed going to the senior's exercise class. He also loved discussing politics with whoever would listen. After his wife’s passing he continued to travel and exercise with the seniors. He also continued to be a fixture at the Lake Mohawk Country Club Restaurant.
Earlier this year, when caring for his house and living alone became too much for him, he moved to Bedford Falls in Bedford, NH to be closer to his only son and his 3 grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his father Willard and his mother Jessie, and his wife Mary Patricia (Mullan) Marchant. He is survived by two brothers, Normal and Douglas; His son George and daughter-in-law, Melissa; and his grandchildren, Ayden, Margaret and Patrick.
A visitation for George will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at McHugh Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 283 Hanover St, Manchester, New Hampshire 03104, followed by a funeral service. The burial will be at Beaver Cemetery in East Bridgewater MA, at 12:00pm on Thursday October 3, 2024.
