Tom was born in Philadelphia, PA. to the late Marian & Francis Schmid.
He received his Bachelor of Science from LaSalle University.
Prior to retiring, Tom spent most of career at L-3 Communications SPD Technologies, Inc., in
Philadelphia, PA where he was a Materials Manager, manufacturing military circuit breakers, providing shipboard systems, electrical products for transportation, power management, electrical components and systems.
Over his lifetime, Tom immensely enjoyed and was proficient at; sailing and navigating; fishing and surf fishing; ballroom dancing, where he met his wife Karen; skiing, which he learned to do at 50 years of age; and hosting dinner parties at home with wine tastings. Tom also hosted many German Nights over
the years at Spray Beach Yacht Club, where he was a member for over 40 years. In 2014 Tom had the
great honor and privilege of being asked to be Commodore of Spray Beach Yacht Club, which he
honored and loved.
Tom was a true romantic at heart, he proposed to Karen at the Jarred Coffin House on Nantucket while they were on vacation. They have enjoyed and loved each other for the last 32 years.
Tom is survived by Karen, his beloved wife of 28 years, his loving daughters; Karen Taylor (Thomas) and
Kristen Schmid, his cherished grandchildren Thomas and Matthew Taylor, and his brother Gerald Schmid (Anne). He is also survived by his sister-in-law Ruth Schmid and his nephews, Kyle and Ricky; and many other nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara Schmid, and his brother, Richard (Ricky) Schmid.
He is also survived by Dr. Roland F. Kaelin, Martin J. Kaelin (Eileen), Catherine Kaelin Watts, Anna Thatcher and many other extended family members.
He is predeceased by his brother-in-law William Watts.
A memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2024 st 11AM at St. Francis of Assisi RC Church, 4700 Long Beach Boulevard, Brant Beach. A celebration of life will immediately follow at Spray Beach Yacht Club.
