Janet Theresa Bruns died peacefully on December 18, surrounded by family. She was suffering from dementia at the time of her death and was a resident at Seacrest Village, Little Egg Harbor, NJ. She was 88.
Janet was born in the Bronx, NY, on April 20, 1929, to Edward Purcell and Elsa (Zwicker) Slattery. She is survived by her loving husband Robert Louis Bruns, Sr., her children and their spouses; Robert Louis Jr., and Ellen Bruns, Susan and Alan Sauer, and David and Sandra Bruns, and her grandchildren Eileen, Christopher, and Benjamin Bruns, and Andrew and Jacob Sauer. She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret (Slattery) Federowski.
Janet was the valedictorian of her high school graduating class of 1947, Curtis High School, Staten Island, NY. She worked as a secretary for Newsweek Magazine after graduation and married Robert in 1954. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother to her husband and three children. Later in life after her children had grown, she worked as an office manager for SCM/Glidden in Montvale, NJ. After retiring, she and Robert moved to the New Jersey shore.
Besides her family, Janet’s Catholic faith was extremely important to her. In retirement, she worked for the St. Mary Parish office in Barnegat as a volunteer and attended mass daily. Janet’s legacy was that of a light to everyone she knew during her life: she brightened, warmed, and guided the lives of so many. She also loved animals and was a trusted, caring, friend to dogs and cats.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s in Barnegat, the Alzheimer’s Association, Funny Farm Rescue, Popcorn Park Zoo, Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter or any other Animal shelter of your choice.
Her family extends their grateful appreciation to all, including the nurses and staff of Seacrest Village Nursing Home, who made her final days comfortable, dignified, and peaceful. In particular, we also wish to thank her health aides Mary, Coleen and Alyssa, who gave her loving comfort and care for almost two years at home.
A visitation will be held from 10:00am-11:00am on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at St. Mary's Church, Barnegat, NJ . A mass will follow at 11:00am.
The arrangements were handled by the Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Dr., Manahawkin, NJ.
