Feeney, Helen Marie (Wannemacher) 92 passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on Nov. 16th, 2013. Helen was born and raised in West Orange, NJ. She married in 1945 and first lived in Pequannock, NJ, Lewes, Delaware and finally settled in Succasunna (Roxbury Township) NJ for 25 years. A summer resident of Manahawkin for many years, she and her husband, Dr. Edward Feeney, retired there in 1984 – a place that they came to love the most.
A mother first and homemaker, Helen devoted many hours to volunteering in various church and community projects. She served as District President for the National Council of Catholic Women in the Paterson Diocese. She established and operated the library at St. Therese School in Succasunna and also a parish library. She became an active member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and it’s community food pantry. She was honored to become one of the first Lay Eucharistic Ministers and brought Communion to the homebound, those in nursing homes and the hospital. For several years, the served as a Chaplain’s Assistant at St. Clare’s Hospital at Dover, NJ.
Upon retiring, she directed her efforts as a Minister to several nursing homes in the Barnegat/Manahawkin area. Helen was devoted to her Catholic Faith and strove to live out the Gospel Message each day.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Edward Feeney, her youngest son, Matthew James and her beloved granddaughter, Eileen Ann Kateri. Also her parents, Ferdinand and Helen Wannemacher and her four brothers.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Michael and Thomas and his wife Karen, her daughters, Kathleen Cerebe and Patricia Stewart and her husband Edward, nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, her sister in law Clo Cummings and many nieces and nephews.
Helen is also survived by her extended family, all the Care Managers and staff of Spring Village of Galloway (formerly Sunrise Assisted Living), Colleen of Compassionate Care and the wonderful and faithful caring staff of Grace Hospice: Patti, Pat, Lesly, Marie, Nurse Fred, Nurse Kim and all the others.
Visitation will be at Saint Mary’s of The Pines Church in Manahawkin on Saturday from 9AM -11AM with a funeral Mass being at 11AM. Burial will take place at St Mary’s Cemetery in Manahawkin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests monetary or food donations to local food pantries or the Community Food Bank of New Jersey during this Thanksgiving season. The need is great in New Jersey and they would greatly appreciate your help.
