Larry was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Murphy. He is survived by his loving wife Carol of 60 years, brothers Edward, Brian, and sister Sandy (Rollins), he is predeceased by his brother Robert. He leaves his sons Kieran, Mark and daughter Melissa (husband Dave Duda), grandsons Peter and Dylan Duda. Larry and Carol lived most of their married life in Ridgewood, NJ, raising their 3 children.
Larry graduated from Lafayette College in 1958 as a government major, where he began as a Ford Scholar at the age of 16. He served as President and V. President of S.A.E. Fraternity. Larry created an Endowment Fund which enabled future students to pursue internships in their chosen fields. Over 20 years he interviewed prospective students for Lafayette College. Larry served in the Army R.O.T.C. during college and left with the rank of Captain in 1967.
Larry’s career began at Citibank in New York, where he rose to the position of VP Petroleum. After 20 years he moved to Bankers Trust, where he became Managing Director, then Partner, and finally Chairman of B.T. Commercial Corp. He “retired” then returned to banking to end his career at Sanwa Bank, where he was S.V.P. Energy.
Larry and Carol spent the last 20 winters at Brays Island, in Sheldon S.C., fishing and hunting and enjoying retirement.
Larry was a people person who loved new adventures and world travel. He was a lifelong member of the Roman Catholic Church. Proud of his Irish heritage, he was able to secure an Irish passport, as his mother was born in co. Meath in Ireland. He loved his summers in Harvey Cedars, NJ. A Trustee Emeritus and Distinguished Honorary Lifetime Member of the Barnegat Light Yacht Club, Larry loved racing sailboats on Barnegat Bay. He enjoyed golfing with his brothers and showing the delights of the Jersey shore to his grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 21,2022 from 12:00pm-4:00pm at Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Dr., Manahawkin. A Memorial Service will be held on 1:00pm Monday, August 22, 2022 at Maris Stella, 7201 Long Beach Blvd.,Harvey Cedars, NJ 08008
In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry's name may be sent to Barnegat Light Yacht Club or Maris Stella Retreat.
He will be forever missed by family, friends and all whose lives he touched.
