He was born on March 15, 1941in Charleston to the late Hesley and Anna Hazel Sanders Carpenter. He attended the Judson Baptist Church, Belle, was retired from Jarrett Printing Company and was a U. S. Army veteran. James also worked for the former Food Shop at Campbells Creek.
Along with his parents, his brother, E. Gene Carpenter, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his daughters, Dawn Carpenter of Charleston and DeAnn Carpenter and husband, Ronnie Tucker of Belle; grandsons, Joshua Carpenter, Zack Tucker, Zaine Tucker, Justin (Kelsey) Vaughan and Rick Tucker; great-grandchildren, Honesty and Riley Carpenter; special daughters, Lisa Goodwin, Diana Lucas Peyton, Karen Belcher and Toni Carson; friends, Harold Kidd and Irene Hicks; and the old Heck players with whom he has played with since 1982, Jane Monday, Bob and Alice Manley, Alicia Herald and anyone else that played.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 20, 2018, at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with Pastor Rick Pursley officiating. The burial will follow the service at Witcher Memorial Park, Belle.
Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday, April 19, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.at the funeral home.
