Skip was born in Parkersburg on January 12, 1954, a son of Janet L. Shannon of South Charleston, and the late John A. Shannon, Jr. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ruth Gilmore, and John and Elizabeth Shannon.
He attended grammar school in Parkersburg, and Lincoln Jr. High School, Stonewall Jackson High School and Morris Harvey College in Charleston.
He married Leslie Ramsey on June 1, 1979 and on June 1, 2024 they celebrated 45 years of marriage.
He loved music, fishing, camping, playing golf and going to the beach at Nags Head, NC. He was a boy scout and loved talking about things he learned in scouts and about going to boy scout camp. He owned a 1971 VW Bug, 1974 VW Bus, and 1978 MGB. He enjoyed going to car shows and once won a trophy for his 1971 VW Bug. He enjoyed taking Michael and Stephen fishing. Once letting Michael and Stephen skip school to go fishing. One of his favorite things was going to camp in Pocahontas County with his friend Bob.
He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 44. He traveled a long journey with Parkinson’s disease for 26 years and now his body is free of the disease.
In addition to his mother he is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Leslie Ramsey Shannon, sons, Michael Shannon, of Charleston, and Stephen Shannon (Jessica), of Lafayette, LA, grandchildren Ricci and Nickolas Shannon, sister Lois Cadle, of Cross Lanes, brothers in law Andy Ramsey (Ann), of Raleigh, NC and Stephen Ramsey, of Cincinnati, OH, sister in law, Tara "Bootsie" Blount (Keith "Wally") and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the wonderful care he received at MICU and 7 South at CAMC General Hospital. Thank you to Dr. Jason Frazer for his kind and compassionate care.
The family would also like to thank the wonderful staff at Hubbard Hospice House for their kind and compassionate care and Dr. Paul Ferguson his neurologist at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Many others were involved in taking care of him over the years and although we don’t remember all your names we are truly grateful for the care you gave Skip.
Celebration of Skip’s life will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday July 23, 2024 at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney.
Gathering of family and friends will be from 11 until time of service at the funeral home.
