Obituary of Hazel Odell Norris Shelton
Hazel Odell Norris Shelton, 92, of Roseland, passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Fairmont Crossing Nursing Home in Amherst. She was the loving wife of the late Robert “Buck” Norris and John L. Shelton. Born on August 10, 1923 in Madison Heights, she was the daughter of the late Chos Edward Perdue and Carrie Ester Farmer Perdue. Odell worked in many different areas throughout Amherst. She worked at the Amherst County Health Department, as a school secretary at the local elementary school, and with the Retail Merchant Association. She loved music, especially singing, playing small games, and entertaining people. Odell was a member of Madison Heights Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and first husband, Buck, she is preceded in death by her children, Dru Norris and Daryl Norris; step-son, Thomas Shelton; and her siblings, Eddie Perdue, Rink Perdue, Lois Myers, Pat Royer, Virginia Caudill, and Doris Glass. In addition to her husband, John Shelton, Odell is survived by her daughter-in-law, Sheila Norris; step-daughter, Melinda Shelton Colgan and husband John; two step-daughters-in-law, Linda Shelton and Laurie Shelton; two grandchildren, Christopher Campbell and Michael Campbell and wife Bre; seven step-grandchildren, Jessica Riggs and husband Matt, Jonathan Shelton, Bryan Shelton and wife Sarah, Camille Shelton, Trevor Mansfield, Eliyse Colgan, and Brenden Colgan; three great grandchildren, Kylan Riggs, Madison Campbell, and Hailey Campbell; brother-in-law, Alfred Caudill; and special nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Monday, February 29, 2016 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Rev. Todd Blake and Rev. John Ragland officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, starting at noon. Friends may also stop by the funeral home anytime on Sunday after 2 pm.
