Richard James Scheffler, Jr. (79) died peacefully in his home in Madison, CT, on June 21, 2024, surrounded by his family. Richard was born in Milwaukee, WI, in 1945 to Richard Sr. and Margaret (Rauser), the first of three siblings including Ann and Susan. His family moved to Kirkwood, MO where he attended Kirkwood High School and became an Eagle Scout. He attended Iowa State University as well as the University of Missouri, and earned his Baccalaureate in Philosophy.
While on a church retreat in 1965, he met Lisa, who would later become his wife. In 1967, he volunteered for the Army and was commissioned as a lieutenant. He was stationed in Bremerhaven and Jever, Germany, during the Vietnam conflict. Following his military service, he returned to the University of Missouri Law School during which time he was featured in the local Columbia newspaper for his skills as a chef. In 1972, he and Lisa married and moved to St. Louis where he practiced law. The family moved to Madison, CT, in 1989, where Richard became an avid sailor and briefly practiced law. He served on the E.C. Scranton Memorial Library Board of Trustees in Madison and was a devoted parishioner and served as a warden at the Church of the Holy Advent in Clinton, CT. For years until his health prevented him from doing so any longer, he proudly served on the American Legion Post 79 Honor Guard.
Richard is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lisa (Dunkle), his children R. James Ⅲ and Margaret (Heil), as well as his grandchildren, Hazel and Richard James Scheffler Ⅳ, Eleanor, Charlotte and Samuel Heil and sister Ann Scheffler Korte. He was predeceased by his sister Susan.
A memorial service will be held in celebration of Richard’s life at the Church of the Holy Advent, Clinton, CT on Saturday, July 13, at 2 pm.
