It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Chan Chuongvan, 85, of Madison, Connecticut. Born in Saigon, Vietnam, on July 20, 1939, Chan was the son of Vinh Chuongvan and Dang Mangloo. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Susan Chuongvan, who passed last year, and is survived by his son, William Chuongvan of New York, NY, and son, Jeffrey Chuongvan-Roy, daughter-in-law, Melissa, and granddaughter, Riley, of East Lyme, CT.
After his family left Vietnam to France when he was a teenager, Chan came to this country with little more than hope and an unshakeable determination to succeed. Through hard work and perseverance, he built a remarkable life of independence and providing for his family.
He first earned his citizenship by training the U.S. military in his home language. Chan next earned his bachelor’s degree as a proud graduate of Lake Forest College, in Lake Forest, IL. Chan later pursued a Master of Science from the University of Vermont and met Susan at this time. He also served the United States as a member of the Army Reserve. Professionally, he dedicated over 35 years as an executive at IBM, where he was known for his work ethic, integrity, and leadership.
Chan primarily raised his family in Newtown, CT and resettled in Madison, CT after retirement in 1999. Chan’s life was a testament to resilience, strength, and commitment. He was a self-made man who was independent, proud and lived his version of the American dream.
The Chuongvan family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this time of loss. The family will be holding a private ceremony to spread Chan and Sue’s ashes at a later date. We appreciate your understanding and respect for privacy at this time.
