William Dewey Freeman Jr. 93, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 27, 2022. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will be in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Dan Gatlyn officiating. The family will greet friends from Noon to service time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, to the National League of POW/MIA Families, in support of POW-MIA Awareness, pow-miafamilies.org or Koreanwar-educator.org in memory of William Dewey Freeman.
Bill was born in Jacksonville, Florida on October 3, 1928 to the late William Dewey Freeman Sr. and Annice Hughes Freeman. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth, son, Charles Richard Freeman, daughter, Shannon Freeman and his beloved dog, Casper.
PFC Freeman served in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II and went to serve in the Korean War. He was twice captured and held as a POW from February 12, 1951 until August 19, 1953. He was affectionally known as “Wild Willie” to his army buddies. After return from the war, he attended Texas A & M University, and went to work for the United States Government as a meat inspector until he retired. He has served as an American Ambassador, sharing his story and has laid the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington DC. He was very active in the Georgia Chapter of the Rolling Thunder. His memoirs is available on-line Korean War Educator, William Dewey Freeman.
He is survived by his sisters, Dot Mitchell his twin, and Margaret Dupree, daughters, Hazel Ann Gray, Shellie Piles and Carmen Rivera, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
