Mrs. Vann Gibson Shackelford, 94, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at The Oaks Senior Living Facility in Macon, Georgia. Mrs. Shackelford was born in Whiteville, NC, and lived in Sanford, NC, before moving to Atlanta in 1943. She attended the Napsonian School and graduated in 1947. She also attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Georgia State University. She was a member of the Young Matrons Circle for Tallulah Falls School and the Rabun Gap Nacochee Guild. Mrs. Shackelford was an active member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Macon, Georgia. Her Confirmation with the Catholic Church was on February 4, 2023. Prior to this, Mrs. Shackelford was an active member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Georgia where she was an Elder and served on several committees. She previously was active in Shallowford’s Food Pantry which served many outlying communities. Mrs Shackelford was employed by the Department of Veteran Affairs, in Decatur, Georgia for 17 years. She then transferred to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and retired from her position there in 1995.
Mrs. Shackelford is preceded in death by her previous husband, the late William F. Shackelford, Roanoke, VA and her first born son, Alan Vann Shackelford, Atlanta, GA, her sister, Mrs. Howard P. Green of Danville, VA, and her granddaughter, Shaheen Ann Shackelford. Vann is survived by three loving sons and their spouses, David Nunn Shackelford (Denise) of Canton, GA, William Lee Shackelford (Lorrie) of Macon, GA and Dr Robert Hill Shackelford (Ladden) of Buford, GA. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Philip K. Cox of Atlanta, GA, twelve grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, GA at 12:00pm, Monday, November 27 . Following interment, Shallowford Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, GA will hold a memorial service at 2:00pm. The family will receive friends at a reception in the Great Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St Joseph Catholic Church, Macon, Georgia , Shallowford Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, Georgia or Shepherd Center, Atlanta, Georgia.
