Tommie R. Lewis, 85, passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2021. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Baxter Hurley officiating. The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Forest Hills United Methodist Church, 1217 Forest Hill Road, Macon GA 31210 or to donor’s favorite charity.
Tommie was born in Houston County, Georgia to the late Willie Isaac and Mary Ethel Ford Lewis. He was preceded in death by his sister, Claire Olenza Brewer and two nephews, Bob Reynolds and Raymond Ryals. He graduated from Lanier High School for Boys in 1954 and worked at Armstrong World Industries for 37 years rising to position of General Supervisor. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Upper Iowa University.
He was a career soldier serving over 35 years to our nation in the Georgia Army National Guard. He rose through the enlisted ranks serving as a tank gunner and commander before graduation from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA. As an officer, he served at multiple levels in the Infantry, Armor, and Logistics branches. As a testament to his leadership, he was selected to command both the 148th Support Battalion in Forsyth, GA and the 1st Battalion, 108th Armor Regiment in Calhoun, GA. He retired at the rank of Colonel as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics for the Georgia Army National Guard. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College and the NATO School. His awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Draper Armor Leadership Award.
He was a member of Forest Hills United Methodist Church. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Alma (Milly) Harris Lewis; their three sons and their families, Charles (Chic) his wife Laurie Davis Lewis, Andrew (Andy), his wife Tammy Scoggins Lewis, Timothy (Tim) his wife Michelle Monroe Lewis; seven grandchildren, Brittani Lewis (Charlie) Sizemore , Dillon Lewis, Jake Lewis, Wade Lewis, Hadlee Lewis, Jonathon (Amy) Swann, Karley (Sam) Clark; great grandchildren, Kaylee, Leena, Zoey, Kennedy Grace, Peyton and AJ; sister, Joyce Reynolds; and nephew, Mike Reynolds.
