Mary Frances Hawthorne Hudson died on April 3, 2016 in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Mary was born on March 8, 1924 in Wilkinson County near Gordon, Georgia, the eighth of nine children born to Benjamin Cleveland Hawthorne Sr. and Ada Belle Taylor. Her husband of 74 years, Hugh D. Hudson Sr., died on March 15, 2015.
She is survived by three children and their spouses: Shirley and Sonny Driggars, Linda and Gordon Goldstein, and Hugh and Cathie Hudson. Mary was especially proud of her seven grandchildren and their spouses—Brian Driggars, Sam and Heather Graham, Diedre Driggars, Scott and Stephanie Graham, Scott Goldstein, Gena and Brian Peterson, and Mark and Amanda Goldstein—and her ten great-grandchildren—Katherine “Katie” Graham, Hudson Graham, Lukas Driggars, Emma Peterson, Lily Goldstein, Evan Graham, Connor Peterson, Hayden Graham, Grady Goldstein, and Carson Peterson. Her younger sister Dorothy LaPlante also survives her, as well as 12 nieces and nephews, their spouses, and families: Faye and Joe Jackson, Marie and Welby Redwine, Debbie and John Gregory, Patricia and Joseph Fountain, Anne and Sammy Dame, Kenneth Hawthorne, Benny and Diane Hawthorne, Dale and Roby Dale Fuller, Katherine Kaul, Janice Vinson, Donald La Plante, and Kathy and Shane Sparks.
Mary grew up in Gordon, and she lived most of her life in Macon. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ including Hardie’s Chapel in Wilkinson County and Burton Avenue, Southside, Thomaston Road, and North Macon Churches of Christ in Macon. Her greatest pleasures were keeping her home, cooking meals for her family, and visiting with family and friends. She was an expert seamstress, and enjoyed painting landscapes, putting up hot pepper relish, green beans, and jellies, and making pies and cakes. She lived the last three years at Huntcliff Sunrise in Sandy Springs where she was assisted by many caregivers including special companion Allison Fuller.
A visitation will be at Snow’s Memorial Chapel at 3077 Pio Nono Ave. in Macon, Georgia at 1:00 on Sunday, April 10 with a funeral service officiated by Harry Goff at 2:00. A graveside service at Hardie’s Chapel Church of Christ in Gordon, Georgia will follow. Grandsons Brian Driggars, Scott Goldstein, Mark Goldstein, Sam Graham, Scott Graham, and Brian Peterson are honorary pallbearers.
