Laurie Lynne Griggers, 54, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2017. A celebration of life ceremony will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. The family will greet friends and family one hour prior to the celebration at the funeral home. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. the Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin, GA with Rev. Gordon Powers officiating.
Laurie was born in Griffin, GA and lived with her parents, Jesse and Dorothy Griggers keeping them on the go until her passing. She was favorite sister of Leigh Anne Clark and Chuck Griggers, best sister-in-law to Randy Clark, and best aunt to Nathan and Ashleigh Clark, and cousin to many including Lynda Sisson, Gordon Powers, Dawn Hardee, Jenny Robinson, David Dick, Kelly Maner, and Chris Stroud.
She was an advid Special Olympian for 46 years earning medals in basketball, sailing, bowling, golf, tennis, horseback riding, bocce and in her younger days track and field in FL, MS, NC and GA. She loved sign language first learning the alphabet and then how to sign songs. She signed “You Light Up My Life” on TV and as an opening act for a Ronnie Millsaps benefit concert. She loved to learn and try new things winning awards for her photographs as a charter member of Macon's Shutterbug Club. Most recently she enjoyed art class at the Mustard Seed with Mary Parks. She traveled with the MS Very Special Arts program to Washington, DC.
She was a member of the Area 7 Special Olympics board and past president of the Kiwanis Action Club. She recently retired from the Tom Hill Kroger with 20 years of service working in the floral department. Laurie was quick to make friends, brighten many strangers' days, and was known for giving the best hugs. She was a trailblazer making it hard for anyone not to love her.
In her memory, donations may be mailed to Area 7 Special Olympics at 2889 S. Estates Road, Macon GA 31216, toward the purchase of handbells for the Mustard Seed Performing Arts Choir under the direction of Cindy Stephens.
