Kay was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, James “Jack” Herndon, as well as her parents, George and Hazel Harvey, and her brother, George Harvey, Jr. Kay was born in Avon Park, Florida. Her family moved to Perry, Ga where they lived for a few years before moving to Monticello Ga. She graduated from Monticello High School and attended South Georgia State College until the untimely death of her father. After moving to Macon, Ga for work, she met the love of her life and she and Jack were married in 1952.
She worked at State Farm Insurance Company for nearly 30 years, starting as a Secretary and then later becoming one of the first women Claims Representatives for State Farm. Kay loved her family and she and Jack stayed very busy enjoying life together with their children. They loved to fish, boat, play bridge and somehow attend all their children’s various activities and sporting events.
When Kay and Jack moved to Statesboro in 2003, Kay became active in the Newcomers Club, line dancing, bridge and canasta groups as well as the DAR. Kay was a life-long Presbyterian and became a member of First Presbyterian Church of Statesboro upon moving there. Kay’s love of people and her fun spirit allowed Kay to make friends easily wherever she went. She took amazing care of Jack as he suffered the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease until his death in 2008. Kay loved her family and friends. She was always eager to go places and to be involved in activities. She was a kind and happy person with a sweet nature who always saw the best in others. She loved to shop, dance, go to movies and cook. No one made a Cream Cheese Pound Cake with Caramel Icing like Mema! She will be deeply missed by her family!
