John Jefferson Jones, 89, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday at Gray United Methodist Church with burial and Military Honors in Middle Georgia Memory Gardens. The Rev. Lamar Harper and the Rev. Richard F. Varnell, Sr. will officiate. The family will meet friends from 10 a.m. to service time on Monday at the church.
Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Nancy K. Jones. Born in Finleyson, GA, he was the son of the late William Green Jones and Pearl Foster Jones. Mr. Jones served with the U. S. Army during World War II attaining the rank of Sergeant and receiving the ERMET Ribbon and the Purple Heart. He retired from Robins Air Force Base in 1976 and worked at Thunderbird Farms. Mr. Jones was a member of Gray United Methodist Church where he served as a Steward for many years. He was a member of Sincerity Masonic Lodge No. 430, Gray. Mr. Jones was one of the Founders of Jonesco Academy in Gray and served on the Administrative Board.
He is survived by the family he adored, his daughters, Linda (Jimmy) Clay of Macon, JoAnn Lyde and Pearl Crumbley, of Gray; his grandchildren, Chris Balkcom of Gray, Brad (Melanie) Clay of Macon, Michael Clay of Macon, Lance Lyde of Gray, Ross Crumbley of Macon and Katie (Trey) Comer of Macon; his great grandchildren, Dylan Balkcom of Minnesota, Katherine Clay of Macon, Alissa Balkcom of Minnesota, Colie Anne Clay of Macon and Sarah Beth Clay of Macon; his brothers, Ernest Jones of Logansville and Delma Jones of Gray; his sisters, Ruby Kitchens of Haddock and Geraldine Watts of Albany and a number of nieces and nephews.
