MACON - James J. Gilbert, 83, passed away Monday, May 23, 2011 at Pine Pointe Hospice Facility. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Pio Nono Avenue with burial in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Marty Watson will officiate. The family will meet friends from 2 p.m. to service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, they ask that memorial contributions be made to Pine Pointe Hospice, 6262 Peake Road, Macon, GA 31210.
Mr. Gilbert, son of the late James Mathis Gilbert and Lorine Lindsey Gilbert was born in Thomaston and had lived in Macon most of his life. He served with the U. S. Navy and was retired from the fabrication department at Armstrong World Industries. Mr. Gilbert was a member of Bloomfield Gardens Baptist Church where he had served as choir director and as a deacon. He loved to sing and was a member of The Redeemed Trio singing southern gospel music and hymns as a ministry to residents in nursing homes in this area. Mr. Gilbert was the brother of the late Pat Pharr and the stepson of the late Ellen Colston Gilbert.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-three years, Elizabeth “Liz” Meeks Gilbert of Macon; his children, Janice Garrett and Mike Gilbert, both of Macon; his grandchildren, Chad Garrett of Charleston, WV, Stacy (Blake) Laneback, Jonathon (Jenny) Gilbert and Alexander Gilbert, all of Macon; two great grandchildren, Brandon Gilbert and Caleb Gilbert of Macon; two sisters, Gwen Archibald of Macon and Gloria Clark of Thomaston; his brother, Ronnie Gilbert of Cumming; several nieces and nephews and his loyal companion of fourteen years, his dog, “Buddy.”
The family wishes to thank the staff of Pine Pointe Hospice for their loving and gentle care of Mr. Gilbert during this time and for their compassion shown for all the family as well.
