MACON – Horace Lord Smith, 99, passed away Thursday, March 8, 2012 at his residence. Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Highland Hills Baptist Church with burial in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. Dr. James C. Bruner will officiate. The family will meet friends from 1 p.m. to service time on Saturday in the Parlor at Highland Hills Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Child Fund International, 2821 Emery Wood Parkway, Richmond, VA 23294-3726.
Mr. Smith, son of the late Marion Eve Smith and Georgia Lord Smith of Sanford, FL, was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Lee McCardle Smith and his grandson, Jeffery Smith. Born in Cedartown, GA, he had lived in Macon most of his life and was the owner and operator of Smith-Stroberg Body Shop. Mr. Smith was a member of Highland Hills Baptist Church where he was very active in the life of his church serving as a Deacon, as a member of the Spinks Gurley Sunday School Class and taught Sunday School at McAfee Towers for more than thirty years. For many years, he was a volunteer with Meals On Wheels. He was a Mason and a member of Macon Moose Club. Mr. Smith was a licensed pilot and lived his life with zest and a love for people. He was active and involved in Macon and the community. He coached Little League Baseball a number of years and in 1956, coached the City Little League Championship Team.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Marian S. and Conrad Nelson of Decatur; his son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Sylvia Smith of Milledgeville; his beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Nelson of Boston, MA, Jonathan Nelson of Budapest, Hungary, Caroline Ham of Florence, SC, Jerron R. Smith of Virginia Beach, VA, J. Rodney Smith of Charleston, SC, Julie Brookshire of Friendswood, TX and Randy Smith of Milledgeville and twelve great grandchildren.
