Cecil David Canady, 84, passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Saturday, April 29, 2017. A Celebration of his life will be held Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 4:00 PM at Martha Bowman United Methodist Church with Dr. Hugh Davis and Rev. Fran Magoni officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 PM until service time. Inurnment will follow in the church Prayer Garden. Cecil was born in Emanuel County, Georgia to the late Thomas Alexander and Cleo Covenah Canady. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Allen Canady. Cecil served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Cecil retired from Brown & Williamson as an electronic technician.
The major portion of Cecil’s career was spent at the Kennedy Space Center. He was involved with some of the major projects of the space program. Cecil worked on the Mercury space capsule which put our early astronauts into space. He also worked on the Thor-Delta missile that was used to put a large number of satellites into orbit and the Saturn-Apollo program, the most important space program of the 20th century that successfully landed our astronauts on the moon. The highlight of Cecil’s career was working on Apollo Man Flights, Apollo-Soyuz Test Project and Sky Lab Orbiting Workshop, and Delta missiles at Kennedy Space Center.
Cecil was a member of Martha Bowman United Methodist Church. He was chair of the Administrative Board, Chair of Trustees, Prayer Ministry Intercessory Leader, Disaster Relief Team Leader and Habitat House Captain. He was also Founder of ROMEOs (retired old men eating out). He received the Harry Denman Evangelism Award for South Georgia Conference United Methodist Church.
Cecil was Habitat for Humanity Macon Area Electrical Team Leader, Habitat Life Time Award, Circle of Friends Award American Cancer Society Bibb Unit, WMAZ Straight From the Heart 2002 Award honoring outstanding volunteerism, LWW Lions Club 1983 Lion of the Year and 1989 Macon Kiwanis Layman of the year.
Cecil dedicated his life to his family, church, friends and being the hands of Jesus to those in need. His famous hugs and loving smile are a part of his legacy that we will all continue to share. Cecil’s great faith in God and his determination to live, love and serve as long as he could are his legacy.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, D. Jane McWhirter Canady; children, Robert G. Canady of Warren, MI, David S. (Julie) Canady of Macon; daughter-in-law, DeRanna Canady of Roberta, GA; grandchildren, Michelle Vaughn (Josh), Kasey Wilson (Ricky), Sheree Scott (Joel), Julie Canady, Carter Canady, Emma Jane Canady; and nine great-grandchildren.
