It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bonnie Thomas Smith, age 97, of Macon, GA on July 6, 2022. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, July 10, 2022 at 3:00PM in the sanctuary of Bass/Heritage United Methodist Church, 4062 Forsyth Road with Renee Bennett and Rev. Michael Jones conducting the service. The family will greet friends at 2:00 PM until service time. Burial will follow at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born on June 30, 1925 in Rabun County, GA to John C. Thomas and Ida Mae Bramblett Thomas. In 1946, she married Joseph “Pete” W. Smith and they moved with their daughters to Macon in 1952. After her husband died in 1966, she went to work for Johnson’s Garden Center for a short time and then went to work at the Department of Family and Children Services where she retired after 23 years of service.
She is survived by her daughters; Janice Ross (Craig) and Jean Kiernan (Pete); her grandchildren, Stephanie McGehee (Frank), Tom Kiernan (Tiffani), Will Kiernan (Christina), and Bonnie Middleton (Edward); her great-grandchildren, Graison McGehee, Maddox McGehee, Carli Kiernan, Cavan Kiernan, Jason Middleton, Joseph Middleton; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings Earnest Thomas, Myrtle Dunn, Thelma Amacker, Marie Langston, and James Thomas; and her grandson, Bryan Ross.
Mrs. Smith loved flowers, so they will be accepted, or donations may be made to Compassus Hospice, 1100 Northside Crossing, Macon, GA 31210 or the donor’s favorite charity.
The family would like to extend love and appreciation to Tanyika Tolbert, Mrs. Smith’s caregiver for the last five years, her friends, Mary Gail Davis and Mary Jones, and those who helped in the last days of her journey home.
