Born May 8, 1935 in New Glarus, WI, son of Gilbert and Hilda Duerst. Graduated from New Glarus High School in 1953, served two years in the U.S. Army, attended Beloit Vocational School and Rock Valley College. Rockford Resident since 1955. Employed at Ingersoll Milling Machine Co. for 43 years, retiring in 1998. Married Karen L. (Waltz) Kiple on October 25, 1969 in DeKalb, IL and became the instant father of two. Member of Riverside Community Church, Rockford Area Gardeners of America, Blackhawk Carving Club and Durand American Legion.
Predeceased by his father and mother, sister, Phyllis Foster, brothers Gerald and Nathan Duerst.
Survivors in include his wife, Karen, two step-daughters, Kim (Gregory) Spease of Littleton, CO and Kelly (Guy) Spinello, Rockford, grandchildren, Lauren (Joel) Sutliff, Michelle and Holly Spease, Chelsea (Thad) Johnson and Sam (Jackie) Spinello; great-grandchildren, Parker and Sophia Johnson, Connor and Elsie Sutliff, extended Spinello family (Paul, Trudy, Deanna, Guy II, and Alli), sisters-in-law, Lucille Duerst, Dianne Edgell, Jane Baer and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Riverside Community Church.
A memorial gathering will be held from 10:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 2, 2023 at Riverside Community Church, 6816 North 2nd St, Machesney Park, IL 61115 with a memorial service to begin at 11:00 a.m.
