passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 2, 2022 in Eustace, Texas at the age of 109.
Gurley was a kind and giving person who was loved by all who met her. She is best known for
her unequaled sense of humor, endless collection of jokes, and her contagious laugh. She
enjoyed working at Southwestern Bell with her friends Ina Chaffin, Ruby Davis and Lois Ward,
retiring after 30 years of service. Gurley and her husband J.T. were strong in faith and were
members of Lancaster Avenue Methodist Church and later Dallas Brethren Church in Oak Cliff.
In her later years she was a member of Payne Springs United Methodist Church. Gurley had a
beautiful voice and loved singing in the choir at each church she attended.
Gurley was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, J.T. Mitchell and their beloved sons,
Billy and Aubrey Mitchell. Also, her father, John Bevely Turner, mother, Bertha Mae Plumlee
Turner, brothers, Otto, Albert, John, G.B. and Carl Turner, and sisters Lillie Turner Horton and
Mary Turner Whatley.
She is survived by grandsons Gary, Terry and Matthew Mitchell. Great-granddaughters,
Heather and Autumn Mitchell, Molly Stanley, and Makayla Mitchell and her three children
Trenton and Trinity Paslay and Tynslee Mitchell.
Gurley was lovingly cared for by Cleta Close, Heather Mitchell and Sheila Curtis. The
knowledgeable, loving staff of Caring Hearts Hospice of Mabank eased the burden of care and
helped us find moments of joy in the midst of Gurley’s transition.
Her funeral service will be held at Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank, Texas on
Saturday, November 12, 2022. Visitation will take place at 11:00 AM, and the service is at 12:00
PM. Interment will follow at Laurel Land Memorial Park at 6300 S RL Thornton Fwy, Dallas,
Texas.
