He spent his first five years on a farm south of Bowman, before moving with his family to northern ID. Most of his schooling was in northern Idaho. Duane started high school in Bonners Ferry, Idaho where he was on the boxing team. When his parents moved to Missoula, MT he went his sophomore year to the Missoula County High School. His love for boxing took him back to Bonners Ferry to live with an uncle so he could be on the boxing team. Duane was a veteran of the Korean War. Serving as a cook at Fort Lawton and the island of Eniwetok where the hydrogen bomb was tested. Cooking was another love of his. His culinary skills were enjoyed by everyone at family gatherings. After the war he met his wife, Ethel "Mickie" Hendryx and they were married on January 22, 1955 in Gresham, Oregon. His wife passed away May 25, 1988. Duane worked on several jobs before starting to work for Convoy Trucking where he would deliver new cars to the dealerships. On April 4, 2004 he married Kathy Nellis in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ethel "Mickie"; his son, Mike; and a sister, Lorraine Escene.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy; sons, Patrick (Kim) and Dennes; and daughters, Pamela (Dwain) Large; and Debra Anderson; ten grandchildren; several great grandchildren; brother, Bryce of Santa Barbara, CA; and sister, Lavonne Otto of Bonner, MT.
Donations may be made in Duane's name to the American Cancer Society, Inc., Seattle Children's Hospital or the American Heart Association, Inc.
The Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Services at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Purdy & Walters at Floral Hills, Lynnwood, WA.
