Leo was born in Lynn, son of the late J. Leo and Catherine (McGinn) Soucy. He was a resident of Wenham for the past 60 years and previously resided in Lynn. Leo was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School Class of 1945. He graduated from Boston University with his Bachelor’s Degree in Education Class of 1952. He continued studying at BU and received his Masters Degree in Education from Antioch College Class of 1977. He was a graduate of New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences.
Leo began his career as a Physical education teacher at Lynn English High School in 1953. After recovering from Polio he continued his career teaching and advocating for children with special needs at Callaghan Elementary School Connery, Washington Community and Lynn Vocational and Technical Institute where he taught until his retirement in 1989. Leo served the Lynn Public Schools for 36 years. He was in the retail business with his wife and owned the Yuletide Company. Leo was a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer and worked in the family business at the McGinn Funeral Home. He also ran summer camps in Annisquam for many years.
He was a WW II United States Navy veteran, he served on the USS Okanogan and held the rank of Third Class Postmaster.
Leo was a long time member of the American Legion Post 0462 and the VFW Post 1093 Ipswich. Leo and Carolyn enjoyed a lot of good times at their home in Key Colony Beach in the Florida keys. He enjoyed being in the outdoors observing nature and pursuing his lifelong hobby for fly fishing in many streams and rivers around the world. He had a unique gift for storytelling. He delighted family and friends with tales from his past experiences and about growing up in the large McGinn Family on Cottage Street in West Lynn.
His passion was his family whom he loved dearly.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his two children Lawrence P. Soucy of Clermont, FL and Eileen F. Gobeil and her husband Ronald of No. Yarmouth, ME. His daughter in law Francie Soucy of Auburn, ME. Also survived by his eight grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Leo J. Soucy, Diane M. Pyburn and Barbara Soucy.
Leo’s Funeral will be Wednesday from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn at 10:00 AM. His Funeral Mass will be in Sacred Heart Church, Lynn at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Tuesday from 4-8 PM.
