IN THE CARE OF
Whitten Timberlake Chapel
Jean Gill, cherished wife of Gary D. Gill, passed away on September 18, 2023. She was born on July 13, 1928, in Columbus, Ohio, to Blanche and Claude Tyree. She was the oldest of six siblings; Virginia, Vivian, Billy, Paul, and Leonard. In addition to her husband of 57 years, she is survived by her son, Claude “Butch” Bryant and his wife Kathy.
Jean and her family moved to Virginia during the depression. She graduated from E.C. Glass High School, and worked in administrative positions at Lynchburg General Hospital, The Telephone Company, Dadant & Sons, and General Electric. She and Gary met while both worked at General Electric. After their marriage, they lived in Lynchburg, then in Thomas Terrace, where they spent the next 45 years, moving to Bentley Commons in 2014.
Knitting, gardening and composting (or playing in the dirt, as she called it!) and recycling were all important to Jean. She was recycling way before it was popular!
A memorial gathering of friends and family will be held at Bentley Commons, 1604 Graves Mill Road, Lynchburg, on Saturday, September 30th from 2 – 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Campbell County Animal Control, at 322 Dennis Riddle Drive, Rustburg, VA 24588.
Jean’s family sincerely thanks her Bentley Commons family, her caregivers at Heritage Green Memory Care, and those at Gentle Shepherd Hospice.
She was loved by many and will be missed. We can hear her now, saying “See you later, Alligator”!
