He was born in Lynchburg, VA on August 17, 1935 and was a lifelong resident with a great love for his community. The retired owner of Smith’s Dry Cleaning and Laundry, Tom was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharist Minister to shut-ins. Throughout his life, Tom served his community through numerous organizations and charities. He was a volunteer with the Lynchburg Museum, delivered for Meals on Wheels, and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a past President of the Lynchburg Host Lions Club where he had been a member since 1958. He attended Holy Cross Catholic School and Villanova University. Tom was a man that never met a stranger and knew all there was to know about Lynchburg, Virginia.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward and Virginia Rogers Smith a grandson, Brogan Thomas Franklin. He is survived by his wife Judy Hardesty Smith; three daughters, Elizabeth Anne Smith, Susan Smith Adams (Frank), and Paula Smith Linkous (Dicky); a son, James (Jay) Smith (Patty); two step-children, Steven P. Bailey and Alice B. Harwood (Randall); two sisters, Joanne Camden (Edward) and Gail Phillips (Richard); three grandchildren, Jason, Nicholas, and Zachary; four step-grandchildren, Megan, Amanda, Oskar, and Christian and two step-great-grandchildren, Kegan and Oaklynn.
A Memorial Mass will be conducted 12:00 p.m., Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. J. Kenneth Rush officiating, with a reception to follow. The family will receive friends one hour prior to Mass at the church, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
