Mary Whitney Fuerst

Mary Whitney Fuerst, age 92, of Huddleston, Virginia passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023. Mary, the daughter of Lawrence Luther Whitney, M.D. and Margaret Hechler Whitney was born November 5, 1930 in Elbert, West Virginia. She spent her first 15 years in Elbert and attended Gary High School. Summers were spent at their family home on Timberlake, near Lynchburg, Virginia where she and her brother Lawrence spent the entire summer IN Timberlake. The family moved to Lynchburg in 1946 and Mary graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1947. Married in 1950, she had three wonderful children and was a "stay at home mom" until 1972 when she started her new career at First Colony Life Insurance Company, retiring in 1990 to marry her dear friend, Don Fuerst and begin a new life in Florida. Everyone who knew Mary knows of her love for her children and as she often said, "I also like them, they are really good people." She had a full life, with some speed bumps that slowed her down, but never kept her down. Mary is predeceased by her parents; Lawrence and Margaret Whitney, grandparents; John and Mary Hechler, and John and Abigail Everett Whitney, husband; E. Donald Fuerst, daughter and best friend; Mary Margaret "Maggie" Franklin, sister; Betty Whitney Quinn, brother; Lawrence L. Whitney, and special friend; Charles Caudle. Mary is survived by her sons; Buddy Driskill (Sandy), Randy Driskill, grandchildren; Allison Deaton (David), Jason Driskill (Shannon), Scott Franklin, Lindsey Johnson (Kevin), Neil Driskill, Jill Johnson (Biff), a very special niece; Carol Dale (Jack), nephew; Terry Quinn (Carolyn), as well as 11 great-grandchildren and extended family and friends. According to Mary's wishes, there will be no visitation or memorial at this time. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favorite charity may be made in her memory.
