Edward Lee Landis Sr., beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather went to be with Jesus on January 5, 2023. He was predeceased by his parents Forrest Lee Landes and Emily (Barnett) Landes and his wife of 57 years Thelma Marie (Jamison) Landis, three sisters Marie Humphries, Ruth Reynolds and Doris Via. He is survived by one brother, Charles L. Landis (Linda) of Salem.
Left to cherish his memory are his children Robbin Dawson (Keith) of Lynchburg, Edward Lee Landis, Jr. (Susan) of Lynchburg, Mark Landis (Stacy) of Monterey, VA; Grandchildren Heather Land (Justin), Joshua Landis (Brittany), Brennan Landis (Stephanie), Emily Kerns (Ellen), Mia Landis, Lee Landis; Great-grandchildren Kohen Landis, Avyn Landis,Teagan Landis, Esmé Landis, Adeline Landis; and a very special friend Joyice Peterson.
Born in Covington, VA, Ed proudly served his country in the United States Army for 24 years and was stationed in Germany, Turkey, Vietnam, Greenland and numerous bases in the U.S. He received many awards from the Army, among them the Bronze Star for his service in the Vietnam War. He served in many divisions of the Army including the infantry, the Airborne division and the armored division but the majority of his work was in Army intelligence during the Cold War. He retired as a Master Sergeant and Commander of the U.S Army recruiting station in Lynchburg, Virginia. Following his retirement from the military Ed served the Campbell County Sheriff's Department as a work release program officer and was a sales representative for several moving companies in the area. Besides spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Ed was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed all sports but had a special love for football since he was co-captain of his football team in high school.
A funeral service celebrating Ed's life will be held at Whitten Timberlake Chapel on Saturday January 14th, 2023 at 10:00 am with Dr. Richard Croxton officiating, assisted by Dr. Melvin Campbell. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park with full military honors provided by American Legion Post 16.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ed's memory to Jordan Baptist Church of Lynchburg, VA.
