John was born in Homer, Angelina County, Texas to John A. Hill and Gladys (Reeves) Hill on July 25, 1925. He lost his lengthy battle with cancer on June 4, 2012 at the age of 86 at his home, surrounded by family members.
He is survived by his loving wife of thirty-four (34) years, Estell Oliver Hill; one son, Gary Hill of Lufkin; two daughters, Linda Summers of Houston and Pat Allen and husband Randy of Huntington; three stepchildren, Barbara Nichols and husband Jim of Lufkin, John Due and wife Dorothy of Lufkin, and Sharon Freeman and husband Don of Blue Mound, Texas; one sister, Faye Hill Vail of Lufkin; one brother, Jimmy Hill of Lufkin; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Tommy Hill; and one sister, Elizabeth Ann Knight.
John served in the United States Army for 13 years during World War II and the Korean War, where he received a Purple Heart. He retired from Louisiana Pacific after many years of service. John loved his family and enjoyed woodworking and building things for his grandchildren. He was of the Baptist Faith.
John's family wishes to thank the compassionate staff of Hospice in the Pines for their loving care.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons and nephews, John Douglass Hill, Kelly Addison, Kenneth Lambert, Allen Hill, Larry Hill and Alton Knight.
Memorial contributions in John's memory may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 West Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
Services for John will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2012 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Ford Adkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Largent Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
