Services for Gene Carter, 85, of Lufkin, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at Calvary Baptist Church, with Bro. Charles Grasty and Bro. Scott Reed officiating. Interment will follow in the Whitehouse Cemetery.
Mr. Carter was born September 29, 1931 in Malakoff, Texas, the son of the late Dona (Bradshaw) and Oscar Carter. He passed away Sunday, August 27, 2017 in a local retirement community.
Mr. Carter was a retired Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper, following 23-1/2 years of service. He was giving, faithful and loved his family and church. He adored his grandchildren and enjoyed helping them with their show animals. He had a charismatic sense of humor, was involved in everyone’s life and will be remembered for his tall tales. Mr. Carter spent years involved in youth activities and spent many hours driving the youth bus for his church. He’ll be forever remembered for his 5-minute bathroom breaks on youth trips. He was a 30+ year member and Deacon of Calvary Baptist Church and proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Carter served for 4 years on the Board for Upper Sabine Valley Solid Waste Management District for Wood County and 9 years as Chairman of Alba-Golden Caring & Sharing.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Francine Carter; daughter, Dianne Register; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Dale Childress; son-in-law, Smokey Davidson; grandchildren, Niki and Will Quillin, Shanna and Clayton Reynolds, Dayla Childress, Klint Register, all of Lufkin, Natalie Kirkland of Denver, Colorado, and Drew and Leslie Childress of Mont Belvieu, Texas; great-grandchildren, Amy Ballard, Chesney and Brylie Quillin, Emmersyn Register, Hallie and Harper Reynolds, Delani Gant, Carter and Hunter Childress; brother, Buster Carter; sisters-in-law, Agnes Carter and Mickey Powers; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his daughter, Dorothy Davidson; son-in-law, Steve Register; brothers, Dean Carter, Ralph Carter and Homer Carter; and sister, Doris Starkes.
Pallbearers will be Ray Funderburk, Ron Beck, Charles Arnold, Marvin Slusher, Smokey Davidson and Joe Simmons.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Baker, Mike Crager, Dick McKay, and Mr. Carter’s grandsons, Klint Register, Drew Childress, Will Quillin, Clayton Reynolds.
Mr. Carter’s family wishes to thank the staff of Heart to Heart Hospice for the loving care shown to him during his final illness.
Memorial contributions in Mr. Carter’s memory may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 516 Montrose Street, Lufkin, TX 75901; or to the American Cancer Society – Relay for Life, 212 Gene Samford Drive, Lufkin, TX 75904.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
