Services for Claudie Gertrude (Purdy) Wheeler, 90, of Diboll, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 6, 2013 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Billy Sims officiating. Interment will follow in the Wheeler Cemetery.
Mrs. Wheeler was born January 25, 1923 in Martinsville, Texas, the daughter of the late Evie Jane (Tynes) and Floyd C. Purdy. She passed away Monday, December 2, 2013 in a Diboll nursing facility.
Although born in Martinsville, Mrs. Wheeler was raised in Spring Hill. She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She formerly worked for Temple Associates, where she assembled furniture, and Temple Sabine Mobile Homes, where she was a cabinet maker. She also worked in her mother’s café in Panhandle, Texas. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and working in her flower gardens and her yard. Mrs. Wheeler was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and a member of the Corrigan Congregation.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Wiley Turman of Corrigan; son and daughter-in-law, Jessie E. and Betty J. Wheeler of Corrigan; son, Monte M. Wheeler of Diboll; sister, Mildred Phillips of Amarillo; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Cathy Purdy of Amarillo; grandchildren, Stephen Harrison, Bethany Pruitt, Steffany Harrison, and Patrick, Colin and Andrew Wheeler; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wheeler was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Wheeler; sisters, Elizabeth Schultz, Lela Stokes and Mattie Dudley; and grandsons, Timothy Harrison and James T. Wheeler, Sr.
Family members will serve as pallbearers for Mrs. Wheeler.
The family will receive friends from noon until service time on Friday afternoon at the funeral home.
