Memorial services for Carl D. Lively, 89, of Lufkin, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2016 in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 5205 S. First Street, in the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel, with Reverend Aubrey Knox officiating. Private interment will be in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Lively was born September 6, 1926 in Percilla, Houston County, Texas, the son of the late William J. and Ruby Mae Lively. He passed away Monday, February 22, 2016 in a local hospital.
Mr. Lively graduated from Grapeland High School in 1942 and then attended Sam Houston State Teachers College. After serving as a musician in the United States Navy during World War II, he returned to Sam Houston State and graduated in 1947. Upon graduation, he came to Lufkin as a band director at Lufkin Junior High where, among other things, he started the Drum and Bugle Corps. In the early fifties, he changed careers and went into the life insurance business.
Mr. Lively was a well-respected and active member of the community. He was a past president of the Lufkin Kiwanis Club and a past Lieutenant Governor of the Kiwanis Texas-Oklahoma District. He was a member of the Lufkin Senior Kiwanis Club. In addition to his Kiwanis work, he served on several boards in the community. Carl was also a member of the Lufkin Masonic Lodge #669, A.F. & A. M for over 60 years. He was a member of Lufkin’s First Baptist Church.
Mr. Lively was known for his outgoing personality; he never met a stranger. Music was a very important part of Carl’s life. He played his bass fiddle every chance he could, playing in various bands and orchestras throughout the years. He also enjoyed playing golf, hunting with his grandchildren and being outdoors.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Charline Lively of Lufkin; son, David Lively and wife Susanne of Lufkin; daughter, Linda Sparks and husband Lawrence (Sparky) of Lufkin; daughter, Sharon Baker and husband Carl of Lake Jackson; daughter, Paula Lee and husband Joe of Pearland; seven grandchildren, Janie Lee Santacoloma, Benjamin Lively, Amy Lively Bruner, Michael Baker, Kyle Lee, Sarah Baker, and Kathlyn Lee.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Lively was preceded in death by his brother, Henry Lively.
