Velma was born September 13, 1918 in Brown County, Texas. The family moved to Childress County in 1919. She graduated from Tell High School in 1936 and married Ernest Baker on May 26, 1936; they remained in Tell until 1942 when they moved to Springlake, TX to farm.
Velma was a homemaker and dedicated worker in the First Baptist Church of Springlake where she was a charter member, and served as clerk for 29 years, Sunday School Director for 12 years, and enjoyed singing in the choir.
In 1985, she and Ernest moved to Lubbock. She became a willing worker for the Lord at Bacon Heights Baptist Church.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest in 1995. And only sibling, Thelma Smith.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Bacon Heights Baptist Church.
