Melvin was born in Lubbock on October 28, 1933 to Cecil and Ira Nancy Kizer. He graduated from Smyer High School in 1952 where he played on the first football team, excelled as a baseball pitcher, and was salutatorian of his class. He married his high school sweetheart, Charlotte Allen, on August 28, 1952. They were married 65 years. They had two sons and two daughters and created a rich family life together.
Melvin began his working career in the Lubbock area, initially working for Bell Dairy and in construction before establishing his business, Davis and Kizer Cabinet Works in 1959. He worked as a professional cabinet maker until his retirement. He taught his two sons his trade.
In 1976, the family moved to Smyer, Texas where he lived and worked on behalf of the community, serving on the Smyer School Board for 19 years, the Smyer Water Board, and was involved in establishing and maintaining the Smyer Senior Citizen’s Building. He was instrumental in the new Smyer post office. He and his wife served with the Smyer Church of Christ until moving to Lubbock where they attended the Green Lawn Church of Christ.
Melvin was a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Scottish Rite Shriners. Melvin’s life was marked by a life of honesty and integrity. His days were spent in service to others and a deep love and care for his family. His family could always expect a well-stocked pantry that he shared with others, his property meticulously kept, a warm fire in the hearth, and a generous hand open to his neighbor at all times.
Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Roy and Ira Nancy Kizer, his brothers, Roy Kizer and Joe Kizer, and an infant sister, Leta Faye.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; sons, Randy Clark Kizer and wife, Barbara; David Allen Kizer and wife, Tonya; daughters, Paula Ann Gass and husband, Don; Nancy Kay Dillon and husband, Steve; eight grandchildren; Nathan Kizer, Julie Ackerman, Cara Kizer, Ashley Teague, Craig Kizer, Matthew Gass, Cody Bettis, Jr., and Evan Dillon; and eight great-grandchildren.
